The WAT in a nutshell
The Woordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal
- documents the Afrikaans vocabulary in all its dimensions and now works on the words that start with S
- is the largest project ever concerning Afrikaans and is the zenith of Afrikaans dictionaries
- is available on the internet to 300 000 students at South African universities
- is used as an electronic resource in teaching Afrikaans in schools
The WAT as institution
- provides a language service via telephone or email free of charge
- promotes multilingualism by providing training and support to the dictionary units for the other ten official languages
- provides training for dictionary writers, teachers, learners and students from South Africa and other African countries
- publishes Etimologiewoordeboek van Afrikaans (EWA), EWA Supplement en Sinonieme en verwante woorde in addition to the WAT and the Elektroniese WAT
- publishes the international technical journal Lexikos which is distributed to 23 countries
