Etimologiewoordeboek van Afrikaans Supplement (EWA Supplement)

  Etimologiewoordeboek Supplement

Although the first edition of the Etimologiewoordeboek van Afrikaans (EWA) published in 2003 contained more than 8 000 headwords, there were a large number of Afrikaans words that deserved etymological treatment, but could not be included in the first edition. Some of these words were treated in the Etimologiewoordeboek van Afrikaans Supplement (EWA Supplement).

The EWA Supplement contains more than 2 300 new headwords. They were carefully selected to illustrate the rich, multicultural origin of Afrikaans words. The dictionary will provide reading pleasure to everyone who wants to know more about the etymology of Afrikaans words. Readers will get a good idea of what happened to Dutch words in South Africa after 1652, and will learn which words Afrikaans acquired independently from Dutch.

The dictionary is readable because different information types are presented clearly and separately. Like the first edition of the EWA, the EWA Supplement presents meanings and interesting reasons for naming things, and presents different types of etymological information separately.

The project is the result of a continuing etymological cooperation agreement started in 1995. The idea of the compilation of a supplement came from the Editor-in-Chief of the WAT, Dr Willem Botha, and was supported by Prof. P.G.J. van Sterkenburg, Director of the Instituut voor Nederlandse Lexicologie (INL), and Dr J. Kist, Treasurer of the INL. The EWA Supplement was compiled with funds from the Netherlands.

Prof. Fons Moerdijk, previous Editor-in-Chief of the Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal and presently Editor-in-Chief of the Algemeen Nederlands Woordenboek, presented various training courses to the editors.

Mr Gerhard van Wyk acted as editor of the dictionary and did the technical editing, while Mrs Alet Cloete, Dr Helena Liebenberg, Prof. Johan Lubbe and Dr Anton Prinsloo were the authors of the dictionary and made the manuscript.

The dictionary consists of 231 pages and can be ordered for R150.

The EWA in combination with the EWA Supplement is available on special offer for R250.
